About UsChris

I am delighted on behalf of the Federation of Entertainment Unions (Wales) to be able to introduce the work of what we consider to be an important pioneering project – CULT Cymru.

The training needs of freelance workers are quite different from those fully or even partially employed in the private or public sector.

This is a message the FEU has been trying to get over to the Wales TUC and the Assembly Government for the last few years. Finally in 2008 we achieved a breakthrough when a joint application to the Wales Union Learning Fund (WULF) was successful and CULT Cymru was born.

The freelancer is a specialised breed of worker.

They are essentially their own small business and therefore need just as much specialist help as any other SME. But of course unlike the average SME, the freelancer is not attached to any workplace for long, works sporadically, tends to be low paid and does not have easy access to information and help.

CULT Cymru aims to do all in its power to change that for the better.

We have questioned members of all five unions closely and there are many common skills shortages. We will do all we can to bridge those, and also to train up as many Union Learning Advisers across the industry as possible in order that they can point others in the right direction. We also recognise that many freelancers do not have time to commit to attending courses which is why we are developing on line, as well as classroom based, delivery.

CULT Cymru will be providing help for freelancers across the whole of Wales and across the whole of the theatre and broadcasting industry.

It is a valuable and unique facility. We hope that it will be of practical use to you.

"I’ve been on one CULT Cymru course and I’m eager to attend many more. The reason? They’re small, personal and ultra-practical. Love at first sight for me!"
